How to Increase Storage Quota in Exchange 2010 Server

In this tutorial, we’ll have look at the how to increase mailbox storage quota in Exchange 2010 server. For an email accounts storage quota is available for a long time in Exchange server 2010 and below versions but it is generally the most overlooked part of database management. In this blog post you’ll get the complete steps how to set the size limitation per user mailbox account.

Exchange server provides three types of storage limits for mailboxes
  1. Issue Warning: In case the limit is exceeded, then you can get the email warning message that helps to know user mailbox getting large.
  2. Prohibit Send: In case the limit is reached, then you will not be able to send email but mailbox continues to receive emails.
  3. Prohibit Send and Receive: In case this limit is exceeded then mailbox shuts down and you unable to send and receive emails.
You can tackle above mentioned issues by increasing mailbox storage quota. Let’s know the complete process how to set storage quotas in exchange 2010.

Step1) Open Exchange Management Console in 2010 Server

Step2) From the left pane choose the “Mailbox” under the Microsoft Exchange option

Step3) Mailbox database list will appear on the screen, now need to right-click on “Mailbox Database” under the Database Management tab then choose the “properties” option.

Once you select the properties option then Mailbox database properties dialog box appears on the display.

Step4) Select the limit tab and check the default size.

By default mailbox storage quota limits are set like:
  • Issue Warning: Its default size is 1.9 GB
  • Prohibit Send: Send permission size by default define 2 GB
  • Prohibit Send and Receive: Send and Receive permission is by default set at 2.4 GB
Step5) Now hit on “OK” button from the bottom left.

How to Increase/Change Storage Quota in Exchange 2010 Server

In case if you require restrictive default storage quota limits for user mailboxes account and you need a bigger mailbox storage quota limit because of the type of working then you need to follow some simple steps.

Note: You need to follow same steps stile step number four that are mentioned in the above section.

Once you select the limit tab then you need to double click on “Storage Quotas” and then a dialog box will appear.

Next Step) Unmark the “Use Mailbox Database Defaults” option from the Storage Quotas section.
With this option you can increase the mailbox storage quota according to the requirement.
Once you reset the appropriate limits for user mailbox then hit on “OK” button.

The storage quota limits are successfully configured.
