Microsoft introduced two ways for recovering deleted mailbox in Exchange 2010 server one is using Exchange Management Shell (PowerShell-EMS) and second one is Exchange Management Console (EMC). In this blog section we’ll learn about how to use the EMC or EMS to recover deleted mailbox from Exchange server.
When you delete a mailbox from Exchange server user account, it doesn’t get deleted instantly. Exchange server disconnects the mailbox and retains it as a disconnected mailbox according to the retention setting. By default retention period is assigned is 30 days. So First we need to check the retention policy.

Once you verify the mailbox deletion retention period policy, now you know that deleted mailbox still available. Since Exchange server hold deleted mailbox and temporary disconnect it, if you check the disconnected list then you’ll see the deleted mailbox if it has not surpassed the retention period.
Recover Deleted Mailbox in Exchange 2010 Server with EMS (PowerShell)
Once you click with server, click on “Connect” tab from left pane bottom list. Now “Connect Mailbox” Wizard window will appear on the screen where you need to reconnect the disconnected mailbox.
After following above process, now check if the mailbox is connected or not, login Outlook or OWA and verify the mailbox as well as test send and receiving emails.

- Go to Microsoft Exchange on-premises
- Navigate Organization configuration and choose Mailbox
- From the right pane select the Database Management tab under the mailbox
- Right click on the Mailbox Database which you want to verify the retention period and choose Properties tab
- Hit on Limits tab
- Now check the setting of deletion and adjust according to the requirement.

- Find Disconnected Mailbox
Run this following command on PowerShell
- Reconnect the Disconnected Mailbox
Run this following command for reconnecting the disconnected mailbox where user object is still in AD “Directory Service”.
- Open Exchange Management Console
- Click on “Recipient Configuration”
- Select Disconnected Mailbox
- Form the action pane, hit on “Connect to Server” under the “Disconnected Mailbox”. Now Dialog box will appear on the screen where you enter the server name and click on Connect.
